That link explains that the numbering didn't show up until The Empire Strikes Back and then was added retroactively to A New Hope (along with the subtitle).. Pros for 123 - I think that for a first time viewer watching in this order has the benefit of having the surprise that is Anakin Skywalker turning into Darth Vader and would also have the viewer feeling more attached to Anakin as a character. Pros for 456 - Watching the OT first has similar benefits, being the surprise of Vader being Luke's father.

456123, and then 456 again because 123 are not up to scratch. 123 are good for completing the story though, and Star Wars wouldn't be the same without them, but they could have been so much better. Except maybe 3, I think that one is really good. 456 is almost all I watched as a kid though, and are three of my favourite ever films.

You start with Luke, follow him through Empire, then go back in time to see the cautionary tale of Anakin/Vader growing into the dark side, then return to see Luke struggle with the same challenge and take a different path.
